‘Braunwald Gin Co’
Callista Lim
FS21
Braunwald Gin Cooperative aims to introduce a breath of fresh air to the existing cultural scene of the village. Gin- an exquisite spirit blended with juniper berries, florals and herbs, most of which can thrive in the alpine climate. Its production process leaves much opportunity for great spaces to be created. The ambition is to create a destination that serves first the community, the existing tourists and then the potential new tourists.
From the history of the Rosengärtens and herb garden run by the community, I saw the potential to expound on this botanical aspect of village life and make it a bigger draw to visit Braunwald. The ground floor will house the distillery, where Braunwald Gin will be produced and exported. Heat and excess water from gin making power the bath pods, which will be open to the community as a new place to rest and rejuvenate.
On the roof we will grow the botanicals for the gin. The open space connects the homes on the upper side of the terrace and serve as an open space for locals to enjoy the view. Of course no distillery is complete without a great bar. Here, visitors, hikers and skiers can enjoy a sublime gin and tonic, with the breathtaking sight of the mountains at their feet.
Nestled into the terrace a short distance away from the train station, the building will also be situated as the final point amongst the existing network of rose gardens. The idea is for the building to be woven into the landscape, almost like it is merely peeking out of the hill. Interlocking the various spaces the creates closed courtyards, another place of calm and contemplation.
