Living Fallow Lands
Tourism in Glarnerland

In Hätzingen, a small village in the valley of Glarus Süd, a new tourism area and an artificial lake are created. The surrounding area has quite a rural character and has hardly any tourism offers so far.
Establishing sustainable tourism is only possible if there is a relationship between the visitors and the residents of the place, if they benefit from each other and have a connection to each other. In order to establish this relationship and to experience Glarus in its authenticity, the concept combines tourism and regional agriculture. The concept is inspired by the ancient caravanserais of the Orient, which once served as accommodation for travellers and their camels in the desert.
Two buildings will be created that contain stables for horses, goats and alpacas and offer holiday flats above them. The animals are farmed by local residents and they are  available for guided mountain hikes and tours.
Two further structures are attached to the road, which contain in total 15 rooms of an organic hotel, as well as a restaurant offering regional dishes and a bakery. The Volg, which originally stood on this site, will be demolished and also integrated into the new building.
The newly created lake, along the edge of which the building structures are oriented, is accessible to the general public and offers a bathing area on the north side as well as new footpaths that lead through the newly created green space up to Diesbach.
