Looking from the cliff over E.G. Asplund’s summer house one can truly appreciate its perfect integration into the landscape, effortlessly stretching like a drowsy dog towards the shimmering light of the bay next to the forest. The house is tailored to perfectly adhere to the ground through its several internal levels, thus determining a direct and physical link with the uneven heights of the ground and reinforcing the sequence of outcrop garden, court, salt marsh, and inlet. Following the main entrance from the wooden deck, the exterior and interior are connected by the social spaces. The interior has been skilfully divided into smaller spaces that generate intimacy and coziness, whilst capturing incredible views of the Swedish forest and bay. The tiled hearth/steps adjacent to the vernacular fireplace is arguably one of the most beautiful features in this summer house. The atmosphere is reminiscent of “Glowing Embers at Dusk” painted by swedish painter Björn Ahlgrensson (1872 - 1918) in 1903 where a whitewashed fireplace dominates the room with its rounded shape.
