The buildings are an old stone house ensemble in a small village in Ticino. Buchner Bründler were asked to develop a residental vacation house out of the existing buildings. The main house was turned into a summer house and the smaller annex became the winter room. The architects tried to preserve the historical information by leaving the traces of teared down walls and floors, so the changes stayed noticable through the structure and surfaces of the walls. Some parts of the buildings, as the wooden beams and roof structures or the old stone roof could not be preserved. They god replaced by steel structures. So is the new corrugated steel roof laying on a steel structure that leaves a gap between the new roof and the old buildings walls. On the other hand, the roof of the toilet building got replaced by a massive concrete cupula, laying on the historic stone walls. The annex stayed nearly unchanged from the outside, as it is much better preserved than the main building. On the inside there is a dark-painted wooden box built into the house, that accomodates the winter room. The project was developed with the help of local craftsmen who still have the knowledge of traditional stone house buildings. It it a good example for how the atmosphere and identity of a historic place can be retained by specific interventions on the existing substance.
